frequently asked questions
Q: Are you available to work onsite, or do you only work from your home / office?
Q: What are your rates (hourly, or flat fee)? Are your rates generally flexible? Q: Do you only develop new MS Access databases? Or do you fix existing ones? Q: What features can a database have, and what kind of data can be stored? Q: Can I store images in a database? Q: What are the advantages of MS Access databases over Excel spreadsheets? Q: How long does it take to develop a custom database? What is involved in the process?
A: Database development time varies per project. Generally, it is a complex and challenging process. After receiving all detailed info from the client and preparing a conceptual design, tables are developed; then queries, followed by end-user entry forms - with lots of VBA and SQL coding; and finally, reports are programmed (as needed). Automation features and error-prevention techniques are also developed (also, as needed). The entire process requires continuous testing and debugging. What also matters is whether a complete user-interface (GUI) is desired by the client - or just plain tables and queries would be sufficient.
So, a small database - with a user interface, simple navigation menus, a few basic forms & reports, and possibly a few automations - can take 40 - 60 hours (2-3 weeks). More advanced databases can take 100 - 150+ hours (or 1 - 2 months) to build & test. However, large custom database applications - with numerous forms & reports, queries, automations, and other features - can take months to build and then maintain. That's why companies hire full-time developers for long-term jobs, lasting for years. To summarize: Development time depends individually on the client requirements and preferences for the database.
